The Whidbey Island Writers Association (WIWA), is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting writers and promoting the literary arts. With help from many people, WIWA has evolved into a multi-faceted association that provides not only its signature annual writers conference, but also workshops and retreats, writing contests for children and adults, classes, scholarships, readings and literary talks, writing groups, and an anthology of contemporary writing, Sea of Voices, Isle of Story. Through its unique, year round educational and networking services, WIWA creates opportunities for writers and brings world-class programs to this small, northwest island community. The Whidbey Island Writers Association actively seeks to create a cultural haven that provides the best literary resources available to established and aspiring writers, while nourishing creativity, connection and communication, and encouraging literacy and enthusiasm for the written word.

Ancient Earth is a school dedicated to building structures using natural materials. It is our goal to foster sustainable practices through experiential education. Our workshops may include clay ovens, cob walls for sheds or out buildings, straw bale, dug out, earth bag, wattle and daub, plastering and earth floors. The Compassionate Friends of Whidbey Island is a self help organization offering friendship and understanding to bereaved parents, siblings, and grandparents. Our purposes are to promote and aid parents in the positive resolution of the grief experience upon the death of their child, and to foster the physical and emotional health of bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents. 

The Compassionate Friends is a worldwide non profit organization. The local chapter serves all of Island and Skagit counties.

Moving people to stick their necks out For the common good. The world needs heroes, people with vision and courage, people who are willing to stick their necks out and take responsibility for solving tough problems, on the planet and on the block. The Giraffe Project has been finding these heroes and commending them as "Giraffes" since 1982, telling stories in the media, from podiums and in schools, inspiring others to stick their necks out and training tomorrow's heroes.

Hearts and Hammers

An annual one-day blitz to repair and rehabilitate the homes of those physically or financially unable to do so alone. Hearts and Hammers is an independent, non-profit program that is supported by the larger community, including churches, schools, service and community organizations, businesses and individuals. Our chapter is very community-oriented and we are a member of the GOHCC. MADD, Island County -- one of over 400 chapters nationwide, this grassroots organization's mission is to stop drunk driving and to support victims of this violent crime. We're MADD because drunk driving endangers people in our community and it shouldn't. We're not just angry mothers and we're not against the responsible use of alcohol.

There are many local volunteer opportunities, such as Relay for Life... a 24 hour community event to raise awareness and most importantly money to fund cancer research, programs for patients, advocacy and education. There are two Relays on Whidbey Island, one on the Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor and one at the South Whidbey High School. (Both events held in June.) The planning committees usually hold the first meeting in November and a monthly meeting thereafter until the actual event. Our national cancer information line is 1800-acs-2345.

A member-operating center of North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) Therapeutic horseback riding may benefit persons of most ages or disability including: CP, MS, visual or hearing impairment, spinal bifida, emotional or learning disabilities, head trauma, autism and paraplegia. Volunteer training is provided. Volunteer opportunities: walking with horse and student, office work, fund raising, horse care. We are an entirely volunteer run organization and always need help. 

Whidbey General Hospital Auxiliary

A group of men and women who exist to serve the hospital through fund-raising and/or volunteering time at the hospital. We have a myriad of volunteer opportunities that run the gamut from Customer/Visitor Assistance and Clerical Assistance to Gift Shop Sales. All volunteers at the hospital must undergo volunteer training which is held the first Monday of each month from 9 -12 in the WGH Board Room. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and must submit to a Washington State Patrol Background Check.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth serving agency which matches well screened volunteer mentors with children ages 6-14 years of age. The program matches children with volunteer mentors based on preferences and interests of the participants. The program serves all children on Whidbey Island with offices in Oak Harbor and Langley. Two programs, the Community-Based program and the School-Based program focus on the individual child building strong friendships that often last a lifetime.
